  Standardized tests give importance to vocabulary. They do not have specific sections to test the vocabulary. Tests like IELTS, TOEFL, and other tests have sections that give brownie points for the use of good vocabulary.
  
  Writing and speaking sections give opportunities for students to showcase their vocabulary.
  
  
  Improving vocabulary Includes learning new words their pronunciation, their meanings, and their spellings.
  
  

  Tips to Improve Vocabulary:

  
  
  Read:  Make reading a daily habit. Read newspapers, journals, magazines etc. You get the opportunity to learn new words when you read.
  
  
  Dictionary: Keep a dictionary handy and make a note of unknown words.
  
  
  Practice: Practice the newly learned words. Write essays using the learned words and also in normal conversation. 
  
  
  Do not memorize: Understand the words and it’s the right usage. Do not get confused with homonyms and homophones.
  
  
  Listen: Listen to audio tapes, podcasts, and English music to enrich your vocabulary. Pay attention to pronunciation. 
  
  
  Watch: Watch YouTube, English movies, and other content with subtitles, and pay attention to spelling.
  
  
  Apps: Use apps that help you improve your vocabulary. Use this on a daily basis and gradually the vocabulary will improve.
  
  
  Create Group: Create a group of students and share knowledge and improve the knowledge. 
  
  
  Use Flash cards: A fast way to build vocabulary is to use flash cards which you can make or use apps for the same.
  
  Play Word games: Games like crosswords, scrabble, hangman, boggle etc, help to build vocabulary. It is a fun and interesting way to learn new words.
  
  Use mnemonics: A mnemonic device is a form of word association that helps you remember words’ definitions
  
  
  Learn prefixes and Suffixes: Root words help to understand the meaning of new words. It gives us clues about words.
  
  Use context Clues:  Try to figure out the meaning of the word from the context in the paragraph. Make sure to cross-check the meaning.
  
  
  The improvement of vocabulary has to be a daily process. You will need dedicated practice to build the vocabulary.
