  IELTS is an English language test for study, migration, or work. Over three million people take tests every year. IELTS is accepted by more than 11,000 employers, universities, schools, and immigration bodies around the world.
  
  

  IELTS Pattern:

  
  
  There are two types of IELTS: Academic and General Training. For Academic and General Training you take the same Listening and Speaking tests but different Reading and Writing tests. Make sure you prepare for the correct test type.
  
  
  The Speaking test, however, may be scheduled up to a week before or after the other tests. If you booked IELTS Online, your Speaking test will usually take place before your other tests.
  
  
  IELTS speaking has a total time duration of 11-14 min.
  
  

  Part 1

  
  
  In Part 1, you will have a 4 to 5-minute conversation with an IELTS examiner about yourself.  In the beginning, you will introduce yourself and give the identity document to the examiner. This section is like an icebreaker and topics include work, family, hobbies, etc. 
  
  

  Part 2

  
  
  In Part 2 of the Speaking test, you will be given a card with a topic. You will be given one minute to take notes on the topic and will be given a pencil and paper to prepare your response; you will then speak on the topic for two minutes.
  
  

  Part 3

  
  
  In Part 3, you will have a conversation with the IELTS examiner about the topic given in Part 2, discussing it in more detail. Part 3 should take approximately 4 to 5 minutes to complete.
  
  
  When IELTS examiners assess your speaking skills, they mark you against the following assessment criteria:
  • Fluency and coherence
  • Lexical resource
  • Grammatical range and accuracy
  • Pronunciation

  Tips for the Speaking section:

  
  
  • Arrive early.
  • Have the identity card ready.
  • Relax and smile.
  • Expand your answers.
  • Make judicious use of the one-minute preparation time in Part 2 Section.
  • In part 3 you needed to give your opinion and justify it.
  • Do not speak very fast.
  • Do not use unfamiliar words as you might end up mispronouncing it.
  • Do not get tense if you are interrupted by the examiner in Part 3 Section as it is natural.
  • Avoid using fillers like hmm, you know, ahh, yeah, etc.
  • Do not memorize your answers, be natural.
  • Do not speak in monotone.
  • Use the correct form of the verb.
  • Practice on common topics. It will make you more fluent and confident.
  • Use varied vocabulary and idioms.
  • Clarify with the examiner if you have not understood anything.
  • Do not put on a false accent.
